Sunflower at Sunset

Bright golden halo—stand above the field,
Usurp the sun’s position in the west,
For night is falling, darkness comes to wield
The fear we little children all know best.

We do not dare to take a step ahead,
And so we wait in corners, huddled close
Together, bound by common hope, and led
In spirit by the memories we need most:

Our loved ones always with us—sandy shores—
The flowers’ newborn buds—the longest fight—
The peace that comes soon after—open doors—
Ten thousand sunsets’ sunrise bringing light.

For now I see, you never went away.
May I rise up, like you, to face the day.

My first sunflower bloom, caught against the backdrop of a cloudy sunset.
