A Sweet Fragrance

“For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:”

2 Corinthians 2:15 KJV

Buttery popcorn, roasted peanuts, and fresh-cut watermelon are some of my favorite food-related scents. Peonies, with their rich sweetness, are a favorite floral fragrance. I even love the smell of fresh-cut grass, until the sneezing starts!

We all have beloved scents that remind us of favorite places, times, and people. Certain aromas remind us of the comforts of home, a special time with a loved one, or a pleasant memory. Of course, smells aren’t always so lovely. We can also think of those not-so-pleasant odors that we would much rather do without!

Just as the scent of a floral bouquet can fill a room, so too are believers a “sweet savour” filling the world with the love of Christ. Paul’s imagery reflects the Old Testament descriptions of sacrifices and offerings, some of which are described in Leviticus as “a pleasing aroma to the Lord.”

However, it is not merely the act of sacrifice that constitutes a “sweet savour.” Rather, it is the attitude of the heart and the willingness to obey God’s commandments, freely and without hesitation, that is pleasing to the Lord. When we are filled with love for God and love for others, our lives become the examples that they are intended to be. In doing so, we are like a breath of fresh air to all we meet.

Or maybe, we are more like movie-theater popcorn drenched in butter. Mmmm, good!

Prayer: Father, may my life be a sweet fragrance to others. Help me to share Your love with everyone.
