The Harvest is Waiting

Therefore said he unto them, “The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.”

– Luke 10:2 KJV

The blueberry bushes were heavy with their round, dark fruit, hanging in clusters like grapes. Harvesting the berries would have required one person to work all day long in the scorching summer heat.

Thank goodness there were four of us laboring together, and we completed the job in two hours. While we worked, we talked, laughed, and encouraged each other. One person working alone would have had a far more exhausting task, but sharing the job with each other lightened the workload significantly.

In Luke 10, Jesus commissioned seventy-two of his followers, sending them out two by two to prepare the hearts of those in the towns he would visit. That first “missions” trip sets an example for how the evangelizing work of the gospel should be accomplished.

While Christian ministry is a solo task at times, working together with other believers pleases our Lord. Having a team to lean on will bolster our strength when we face hardship and challenges.

Let’s make a renewed commitment to fulfill the command of the Great Commission and to do so by working together with other believers.

The harvest is waiting: let’s get to work!

Prayer: Father, thank you for salvation, and may I be ready and willing to work with others to share the Gospel.

What a bountiful harvest from today’s efforts! We are “fishers of men,” but maybe pickers of blueberries too!
