Darkness and Light

Advent—Hope—Day 6

A cold rain soaks and deeper grips the chill
To whitest bone—no marrow giving life,
For hope is gone—cut off—the flinty knife
To blame? The darkness of the human will.

For death is our reward, and rightly so.
No holy thought or deed within our hearts
Surpasses that of self; our inward parts
All skewed and cracked—impossible to grow.

Until the question comes from God above:
He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones live?”
The four winds blew, the hope the Spirit gives,
To resurrect—redeem—the world by love.

The Way, the Truth, the Life has given sight:
Eternal Son of Glory—Promised Light

Prayer and Reflection: While Easter is a more traditional time to consider the state of our souls, the Advent season should also be a time of reflection. Thank God for His deep love for us, and meditate on what Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection really mean to you.
