The Reason Why

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Isaiah 55:8-9 ESV

The retractable nozzle on the kitchen faucet had repeatedly not been set back to place, but it did not bother me. Neither did I wonder why it was left that way. A by-product of my life experiences is a greater ability to overlook things that used to bug me, such as towels left on the floor, clutter on the countertops, and shoes piled by the door.

But something that had been bugging me was the faucet’s water pressure, which had seemed to increase in recent weeks, spraying more strongly and usually wetting the front of my clothes anytime I turned it on full blast. I did not know why it was happening, and neither did Sweet Husband.

But he noticed my turning the nozzle back and around, letting it return to its proper position, inside the faucet. He said, “You know why I’ve been doing that, don’t you?” That he had been the one who had changed the nozzle’s position had escaped me.

I responded, “No, I have no clue.”

He said, “It keeps the water from spraying out so far.”

Aha! Now if I only knew the reason behind everything else that happens in my life, I’d be ahead!

It is not often that we understand the reason why some doors open and others close. Hindsight is 20/20, as the saying goes, but sometimes we never get answers to our questions. What we do have are the promises found in Scripture. We can rely on the Word of God when all around us seems uncertain or when our understanding only goes so far. God’s ways are higher, better, and greater than anything our small minds can possibly contain.

His plan might seem like a misplaced faucet nozzle, but it might be what’s keeping you from getting hosed!

Prayer: Father, increase my faith. Help me to trust You more.
