When the Words Don’t Come

When the words don’t come and there’s nothing
To clear the dark cloud from the sun
And the lightning strikes, day turned to night,
For grief’s rains have just begun.

Your mind might be empty and silent
Or filled up with questions and pain.
You can’t hold a thought for a second,
It’s impossible just to think straight.

And it doesn’t make sense, like a time warp:
They were here just this morning, you say.
Their coffee cup’s still on the counter.
Their towel’s still damp where it hangs.

And you close your eyes thinking surely
This terrible news can’t be true.
But arrangements are made, so we call them,
For death paid a visit to you.

It reminds us our time is quite short here,
In this world that we’re just passing through,
On our way to a place that’s much better
Where perfection awaits me and you.

So when the words don’t come, just remember
Though sorrow may grip you today,
There will come an end to the suffering
Though we don’t know just how or what way.

But God in His mercy will help us
In this world that is so full of strife.
Put your hope in the One who died for you.
His goodness is better than life.
